Young Musician’s Recital: Sheku Kanneh-Mason

For Sheku Kanneh-Mason, winning BBC Young Musician 2016 was only the most high profile of a string of distinctions, prizes, awards and scholarshipswhich began when, aged nine, he gained the highest mark in the UK for Grade 8 cello – only three years after starting lessons with Southwell’s Sarah Huson-

One of our Festival’s founding principles is to give opportunities to young musicians and the Saturday morning Masterclass and Lunchtime Recital are
fundamental to this approach. In 2015 Sheku took part in the Masterclass – working on the Shostakovich concerto which he performed to win BBC Young Musician. We warmly congratulate Sheku on his success and are thrilled that he has returned to give a recital at the first opportunity.
