2016 Performer Profiles:

No.6 – Simon Cox (trumpet)

Associate Artistic Director Jamie Campbell introduces some of the outstanding performers taking part in the 2016 Southwell Music Festival.

“The very high standard of Festival performances is due to the quality of our visiting musicians. I thought our audiences would enjoy getting to know some of these very special players and singers so we will be publishing a short series of profiles in the days leading up to the Festival. We are delighted to welcome Simon Cox back to the festival again this year. He is a good friend and colleague, both of Marcus and of me.”

Please introduce yourself

simon cox“I’m based in London and divide my time between my roles as artistic director of Septura (a brass septet whose members are principal players in London’s major orchestras), director of Resonata Music (a publishing company) and working as a trumpeter, both as a member of Aurora Orchestra and a freelancer with UK orchestras. I’ve also just completed a PhD at the Royal Academy of Music!”

What are you most looking forward to playing at the Festival?

“A tough question, but probably Britten’s remarkable Fanfare for St Edmundsbury which we perform at the free Friday lunchtime concert. It should be especially effective as it echoes around Southwell Minster.”

What projects do you have coming up after the Festival?

“I’m very excited about the week after the Festival, which will involve me lying by the pool in Majorca drinking cocktails…following that it’s back to a mixture of all of the above projects: Septura are releasing a Christmas CD this year so I’m looking forward to hearing people’s reactions!”
